Bacterial Infection & Pregnancy: Safe Sex & Medication (Flagyl)

Question
My dr. told me Tuesday that I had a bacterial infection. I am taking Flagyl ( i PO BID). Is it safe to have sex? He didn't tell me not to but what I have says not to. I am 23 1/2 wks pregnant. Thank you for your time.

Answer
You can safely use Flagyl or Cleocin for a bacterial infection during pregnancy. It is also safe to have intercourse during pregnancy, whether you are taking antibiotics or not. Remember, Flagyl has an "antibuse" effect and will make you violently ill if you drink any alcoholic beverages while using the metronidazole. Although you can, indeed, have sex while using Flagyl, if you have a bacterial infection, you may be irritated and inflamed and sex may be uncomfortable. You also do not want to intoduce more infection.
