Bladder Infection Medication & Pregnancy: What You Need to Know
Questionhello, i was wondering if i can take my bladder infection medication if there is a possibility that i may be pregnant? i've been trying to get pregnant for 5 months, and due to all the sex and laying still to let the sperms swim for at least a half hour afterward, i have had three bladder infections during this time. this month i was trying to be extra careful and clean, but i think its possible that not all the bacteria were gone before i stopped taking the pills. i didn't want the pills to affect my fertil time. so now i have the possiblity of being barely a couple weeks pregnant and am suffering again with a bladder infection. i'm embarassed at the thought of going to see my doctor yet again for a bladder infection. i'm trying to be clean i'm just really sensitive. i still have my pills from last time and would gladly take them. but only if it won't hurt my possible baby. thanks for any help
AnswerAntibiotics for bladder infections are perfectly safe for use during pregnancy. I would recommend Ampicillin or Nitrofurantoin rather than Septra if you are in early pregnancy. However, if you are not yet pregnant, any antibiotic is fine and will not interfere with conception or cause any problems once you conceive. It is more important to treat the bladder infection then to wait.
