Vaginal Sensitivity During Pregnancy: Causes & Relief

Question
Hi, I am 23 weeks pregnant.  On and off, mostly on, my vagina is really
sensitive or is feeling irritated.  I stopped using dryer sheets, wear only
cotton underwear, but it is still uncomfortable.  It's hard to explain exactly
how it feels.  The outer labia is irritated and the inner has kind of a tingly
feeling.  It doesn't burn or itch and I don't see anything when I look with a
mirror.  It may look a little more red instead of pink.  I have told my doc that
it feels irritated but he hasn't checked it because he has checked 2 extra
times at my request because I get nervous about any changes since I've been
pregnant.  I don't want to ask again!   Any thoughts, or should I request that
third exam?

Answer
Dear Lindsey,

If nothing else, if you are having symptoms, you should be screened for vaginal infections (if that has not been done). Also, yeast infections are EXTREMELY common during pregnancy. This is due to the increased level of estrogen in the body. If yeast infection become a recurrent problem, an underlying cause should be determined. Cranberry juice and yogurt are two foods that may help prevent the occurrence of yeast infections and aid in their treatment. But you would need to be treated for a yeast infection. Success during pregnancy is somewhat limited, so it is good you are doing preventative things to try to minimize the chances of developing an infection.

If you are concerned about actually having a yeast infection, they can simply do a swab to check. Otherwise, you really do want to avoid too many vaginal exams. The more exams you have, the greater the chance of introducing an infection.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I am sorry for the delay - the system should have had me on vacation, so I was not checking in. I wish you well.
