Strep B in Pregnancy: Concerns About Antibiotics & Induction

Question
I an strep B positive and have had a urinary tract infection due to this during this pregnancy. We live over an hour away from the hospital and I am very concerned that we will not make it in time to get the full dose of antibiotics during labor. Would it not be the safest route to be induced at 38weeks to ensure the health of our baby. Right now I am 37weeks and 1cm dialated.

Answer
Hi Allissa,

Your doctor will not induce you, unless their is an immediate danger, to you or your baby.

Strep B is common, in pregnant women. Statistics say that 1 in 200 babys will get the infection, if antibiotics are not given. If antibiotics are given,1 in 4000 babies will contract the infection, if antibiotics are given. So you see, that the chances are low, that your baby will even get this infection.

Regardless, The antibiotics are given intervenously. And I really dont think you have a thing to worry about. It will be the firs thing on the agenda, when you arrive to the hospital. But, if you really have worry, discuss it with your doctor ..perhaps, he will make an acception ..

Also, there are homeopathic medicines as well, that can also control the infection, before labour. Its highly advised, that you speak to a homeopathic physician before taking these remedies. They can be taken up to  weeks before your delivery date.

Hope this of some help.
