VBAC After C-Section: Understanding Your Options & Risks

Question
I am 35 years old, this is my 2nd pregnancy, I am currently 36.5 weeks.  I had an emergency c-section with my first child after 12 hours of labor and no progression - his head was too big.  Now I am strongly considering VBAC, however, an ultrasound at 34 weeks shows my baby as again having a large head and already 6lbs 8oz.  My doctor is a strong supporter of VBAC, but my main concern is going through a long labor again only to have another emergency c-section.  I keep reading that this presents more risk than just scheduling a c-section. It is time for us to make a decision and I would appreciate any insight you could provide.  Thank you.

Answer
If a sonogram shows that the estimated fetal weight of the baby is greater than 9.5lbs, you should have a repeat cesarean section. However, if the EFW is less than 9lbs you can certainly attempt a VBAC. If you chose to have a repeat cesarean section, it would be scheduled at around 38 weeks gestation and can be done carefully and slowly. If you do attempt a VBAC, and are not successful, the cesarean section may have to be done quickly, increasing the risk. The choice is yours.
