Pregnancy After a Classical C-Section: Risks & Considerations

Question
On July 25th, 2009 I went into pre-term labor and gave birth via Classical C-section to my little girl at 24 weeks. Unfortunately, she didn't survive past 16 days. My doctor advised me to wait a year before I conceive again, which is completely understandable. Although I have been using birth control, I am still afraid that I may become pregnant. My daughter was conceived while on the pill. It's only been 2 months since the surgery, and my question is what would happen if I were pregnant? Could I die from uterine rupture? Would I be forced to have an abortion? Is it possible to continue the pregnancy to full term??

Answer
Hi Quella,

It takes your uterus a minimum of 6 months to heal after a c-section. If you stretch the uterus with another pregnancy before it is healed you risk the chance of uterine rupture which could cause you to loose the baby and possibly your uterus. Because you had a classic c-section, you are at a much higher risk of uterine rupture therefore a c-section would be required before the onset of labor. I really advise you to wait at least 1 year.
