C-Section vs. VBAC: A Diabetic Mother's Dilemma
QuestionHello, I am currently 31 weeks pregnant. I am a type 1 diabetic of 15 years and am on my third pregnancy. My first child I had vaginally. My second I had c-section because he was 9Ibs 10oz. Now, I am expecting my last child. I would truly like to have a vaginal birth. My bloodsugars have been regular and My hemoglobin was 6.5% which is good. My doctor tells me that I have to have a csection. I REALLY don't want to and I would like to know your opinion in the matter. I know it's a complicated case but is there a good percentage that I could have a VBAC? I appreciate your help in this matter.
AnswerIf your diabetes is under control, I don't see why a c-section would be a must. In addition, NO ONE can force you to have a c-section. It is your legal right to refuse one.
It sounds like your doctor may be putting his/her desire to "protect" him/herself over your desires. I strongly recommend you find a different OB/GYN. I recommend talking to midwives in your area. There are many, many caregivers out there that would be more supportive of your choice. I recommend you seek them out because they will be essential to you getting the birth you want.
Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.
Best wishes,
Helen =)
