QuestionI am currently pregnant with my fourth child, and I have had two previous c sections. I have been told that after two c sections I cannot attempt a vbac anymore. Is this set in stone or are they just being cautious?
AnswerDear Kathy,
VBACs are typically assessed on a case-by-case basis by the attending OB and usually the evaluation of the uterus from the previous C-section by that surgeon is taken into heavy consideration. The recommendation of VBAC is made after considering many factors, which would include:
- number of pregnancies/deliveries
- how recent the last pregnancy was
- uterine condition
- previous maternal complications
- previous labor/delivery history
- maternal health
- estimated size of baby
In your situation, I can't tell you whether they are being a bit over-cautious or absolutely prudent. But either way, I guess I have seen enough tragedy that I personally would rather err on the side of caution. I always wanted to have a VBAC with my 2nd and was unable to at the last minute. I have now seen enough that I am perfectly content with my repeat C-section and a healthy baby.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
