Persistent Bladder Infections in Pregnancy: Causes & Relief

Question
I am 29 years old and 27 weeks pregnant with my first child today.  I have been fighting a bladder infection for over a month.  I am on my 4th round of antibiotics.  Last week I was admitted to the hospital for 2 nights where I received two different types of antibiotics, then Thurs sent home with a prescription for Keflex and peridium.  The peridium is not helping much. Still very painful when I urinate and at times I am going as much as 4 times an hour.  Why cant I get rid of this?  Could it be a virus rather than bacterial?  I dont know what else to do.  Before I was released from the hospital, my doctor made the comment that we might not know whats going on until after the baby is born.  I hate to be on antibiotics the entire pregnancy, Im worried about the babies immune system.  and I cant be this uncomfortable for 13 more weeks.  What other suggestions could I give my doctor?

Answer
If you have a urinary tract infection of some sort that is not responding to several courses of antibiotics, it is time to be evaluated by a urologist. Unfortunately, there are not many medications that you can take while you are pregnant to make you more comfortable. You have to try to eradicate any type of bladder infection to prevent ascending infection that may cause chronic kidney problems. Don't worry about the baby's immune system. The antibiotics that you take will not harm the baby's immune system. What do the urine cultures show?
