I just wanted to confirm with you: I am from South Africa and the Maxolon injection they gave me indicated : "metoclopramide"... is that the same medication you referred to in your answer to me? I am just afraid that different trade names might be used in different countries? If it is not the same is the once off use of metoclopramide safe? Thanking you again for a great service!

Currently 13 weeks pregnant and was recently hospitalised for severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and subsequent dehydration. Was placed on a drip and the dr gave me 1 maxolon shot (intra-muscular) - which he assured me was safe during pregnancy - can you please confirm that the latter is indeed the case? Your advice appreciated...

Maxilon is actually "Dextroamphetamine" and I'm nor sure of its effects during pregnancy. Usually, hyperemesis gravidarum will disappear by 15 weeks gestation. Other than hydration, replacement of electrolytes, and gastric rest (NPO), we usually use Zofran 4mg every four hours to control nausea and vomiting. I do not know why you were given Maxilon. However, it is considered a class C medication and can be used during pregnancy if the need warrants the risk.

No, Metoclopramide is not dextroamphetamine. I am not familar with that medication. YOu will have to ask your doctor exactly what the generic name is and what, exactly it is. Ask what the equivalent in the US may be and I cancomment.
AnswerThank you for your patience. Reglan is safe for use as an antiemetic during pregnancy. I like to use Zofran because it seems to work better. However, for years we used Reglan to control nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Also try eating tiny meals throughout the day, avoid dairy products for now, avoid greasy, fatty, or spicy foods. Dring Ginger Ale and carry around crackers throughout the day. Reglan is safe.
