Sinus Infections During Pregnancy: Safe Treatment Options

Question
Hi

I am 34. 21 weeks pregnant with my second. I am continously having sinus infections and taking amoxycilin for the 3rd time this pregnancy. The blockage I can deal with my constant severe headaches my obs thought it's best if it's dealt with now as we will run out of options if things are left till the end. I work full time and quite busy.I do steam inhalation, use saline drops to minimise congestion but anyway end up getting sinus under my eyes(one side)infected from time to time. It takes several days now for the amoxycilin to work, I suppose my body is becoming used to it. I am planning to go to an ENT specialist if I get it again.
I know antibiotics are not good for the baby and worried about harming it. They did a scan last week and said everything was fine. What harmful effects can antiobiotics/frequent use of them during pregancy can have on the fetus and any advice you can give will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Ganga

Answer
I was not aware of any harm with antibiotic use during pregnancy. We cannot use Tetracycline during pregnancy because it causes blackened teeth of the fetus, and we do not  use Sulfa containing antibiotics in the last trimester of pregnancy. HOwever, most other antibiotics are safe for use throughout pregnancy. You can also use Nasal Sprays without feat as long as you use then according to the directions. Overdosing can cause a "rebound" which will make you miserable (the baby is not effected). We have used antibiotics during pregnancy for many, manuy years with no problems.
