QuestionI am 35 and have no history of miscarriages (and no children). Soon after I had a blood test confirming that I was 6 weeks pregnant I started spotting. I thought nothing of it, but then I started to bleed where I needed to change pads several times a day. I went to an emergency room after this happened a couple of days, and was surprised to learn that I hadn't been miscarrying (at least not yet). I saw the fetus (this is before fetal stage?) during the ultrasound, but the radiologist was concerned about the amount of bleeding that was visible around the amniotic sac, and that the heart rate was only 113. At this point I was deemed 6 1/2 weeks pregnant.
I bled a significant amount the following day, but after that it's only been spotting (4 days now).
Is this a sign of impending miscarriage? If I don't (miscarry) are there significant risks that as the baby forms there will be deformities, brain damage, risk of premature/still birth? I haven't been able to find any answers and I have no experience or knowledge on the subject.
Thank you for your help!
AnswerAny time you have some vaginal bleeding during early pregnancy, it is called a "threatened abortion". 50% of the cases will go on to miscarry and 50% will go on to have a perfectly normal baby. If you do not miscarry, there are no risks to the baby, no deforities, no brain damage, no risk of preterm birth (due to the bleeding). If a sonogram saw evidency of a fetus and a fetal heartbeat (even if it was a bit low) there is a good chance that all will be fine. if you continue to bleed with cramps, you will have to have another sonogram to see what is going on.
