Pregnancy Concerns: Bleeding, Stress & Alcohol Consumption - Seeking Guidance

Question
good day.

I am 29 and have 2 healthy children 12 and 6.  the first day of my last period was September 26 but believe i got pregnant on October 4th -7th.  I went through terrible stress the weekend of october 8th and bled with cramps that entire week.  Thinking i had a miscarriage i have been drinking at least 6-8 drinks per day since and found out this morning that i am pregnant.  I am soooo nervous, thinking about abortion, i know absolutely to STOP drinking but have serious questions about how much damage i have done to the baby already, would you reccommend abortion knowing how much i have drank and the damage that has already been probably done?

thanks

Answer
If your last period started on September 25, you would have ovulated on October 8 and could only have conceived if you had unprotected sex on October 7,8,9, or 10. We do not know how much alcohol is safe. We do know that "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome" occurs with constant drinking throughout the pregnancy and "binge" drinkers. We used to think that an occasional drink is not harmful. However, it is not know  whether even a few drinks will cause problems. Usually, however, in very early pregnancy, alcohol will have an "all or nothing" effect and you will either have a miscarriage or the baby will be perfectly fine. There is no way to guarantee this, however. If you have been drinking heavily for the past month, there is no way to know the extent of the damage, if any. I would not recommend abortion but that decision is up to yoo.
