Late Period & Positive Pregnancy Test: What Could It Mean?

Question
I realized my period was two in a half weeks late so I took a home pregnancy test and it was positive with a light pink line. I wasn't sure if it was positive so I took two more. It did the same. So I made an appointment at my local womens clinic for a prenancy test. It was positive. But the next day I had light bleeding like I started my period. Could I not be pregnant even though I tested positive?

Answer
Dear Keshia,

You seem to have absolutely done the correct things thus far! I will assume that your periods are somewhat regular for you to suspect that you were pregnant to begin with. Therefore, it tends to be a bit easier to determine whether bleeding is an actual menstrual period or a little "breakthrough" bleeding. A small amount of bleeding isn't all that unusual in very early pregnancy - also called implantation bleeding. Although you didn't say specifically, describing it only as "light". I'll also assume the bleeding you describe did not last as a normal period would.

Based on these assumptions, my conclusion would be that you are more than likely pregnant - especially after it was confirmed by three home pregnancy tests and clinical lab testing.

My best advice is to make an appointment with your family physician or OB/GYN as soon as possible for complete confirmation.

Good Luck to you!
