Miscarriage & Irregular Periods: Understanding Your Cycle - Ask an Expert

Question
I am 20 years old, 0 children, and LMP was November 17-21, 2005.
I will start by telling you I was on the Birth Control Patch for a year and got pregnant on it, and didnt know i was pregnant until I was 6 weeks pregnant.
I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks In August, and they had to do a D&C on Sept 9th because i was bleeding bad. I had a normal period from Sept 30-Oct 4th, and then a period on Nov 17-21. I have not yet started again. It was 48 days between my last 2 periods, and Im concerned. I have no insurance now, and cannot go to the doctor. Should my periods be back to normal now?  Im not pregnant, because Ive had 3 negative tests. Shouldnt I be regular now that Ive had a D&C?  We are wanting to try for a baby, but since my periods are messed up Im concerned.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
After a miscarriage, it may take some time to return to regular cycles. If you do not regain your normal cycle, I would suggest that you go on birth control pills (not necessarily the patch) for a few months in order to regulate your cycle. If you have not had a period since November 17,and have had three negative pregnancy tests, you should call your gyn and take provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days and you should get your period within 10 more days. Once you get your period, go on birth control pills until your period is regular again. That is the safest way to go.
