Miscarriage Symptoms & Rhogam Concerns: What You Need to Know

Question
I am uncertain if I just had a miscarriage 3 days ago.  My cycles are all over the place since I had my daughter in Feb. 08 so when it was a week or two late I just figured it was due to my stop in nursing when my daughter turned a year old.  3 days ago I passed two big clots and I am not sure if it was a miscarriage or just a weird period thing.  I am RH- and I am wondering if this was a miscarriage, do I need a rhogam shot (I was 5-6 weeks if I was pregnant), should I contact my doctor or has the time that past been too long?

Answer
Dear Karine,

RhoGAM should typically be given within 72 hours of birth (or other delivery event). Because you are so irregular and because the first period or two when discontinuing breastfeeding can be unusual, it is difficult to know what has occurred. However, if you have had unprotected sex at any time during the last cycle or two, you cannot dismiss the possibility of pregnancy and I would suggest you contact your doctor. He/she can then determine whether a RhoGAM injection should be given - just in case...

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
