QuestionI was in a car accident in 2005, 8 days after my daughter was born. my hips were fractured in 2 places and thats all the doctors found. Since then I have had 2 miscarriages. My last miscarriage was in december of 2006 and I am pregnant again. What are my chances of having another miscarriage and will I have to have a c-section if I do make it through the pregnancy?
AnswerDear Channon,
Most miscarriages are due to a chromosomal abnormality - meaning that something is not correct with the baby's chromosomes. Most chromosomal abnormalities are the cause of a faulty egg or sperm cell or are due to a problem at the time that the fertilized egg went through the division process. Other reasons for miscarriage are:
-Hormonal problems, infections or health problems in the mother
-Lifestyle (i.e. smoking, drug use, malnutrition, excessive caffeine and exposure to radiation or toxic substances)
-Implantation of the egg into the uterine lining does not occur properly
-Maternal age
-Maternal trauma
Now, without knowing the extent of your medical history, I cannot answer your questions. Your questions will be better answered by the doctor who treated your fractures. He/she would be able to tell you if there was anything about the was the hips were fractured and/or repaired that would have caused implantation issues or any other problems with these subsequent pregnancies and should definitely be able to tell you if it would be necessary for you to undergo a C-section rather than a vaginal delivery.
For now, all you can do is try to think positively, take it as easy as possible, eat healthy, and take care of yourself. Unfortunately, we don't have the answers as to which ones will come through full-term and which ones won't or what the odds are for each pregnancy. All we can do is try our best to be the vessel. If it is meant to be - it will.
I hope this has helped a bit and I will have a good thought for you. Be well!
Brenda
