Acetone Exposure & Miscarriage: Exploring the Link
QuestionI recently had a miscarriage after 2 successful pregnancies. I had a fetal demise at 14 weeks gestational age. I had dermal exposure to fingernail polish with acetone (approx. 30 minutes). Is it a possibility that this exposure could have caused my miscarriage? I had no other symptoms associated with miscarriage.
AnswerAcetone is nor harmful for use during pregnancy and does not cause miscarriage. There is nothing you can do to cause a miscarriage and there is nothing you can do to prevent a miscarriage. Sometimes, a second trimester abortion (which is what you had) will be caused by a sub-clinical infection in the uterus. It can also be due to a catastrophic event (heart attack, etc). Unfortunately, there are no warning signs prior to a fetal demise in early pregnancy.
