Pregnancy Test Timing & Late Ovulation: Expert Advice

Question
Dear Dr. Rappaport,
I am 35, trying to get pregnant and stopped the pill in July (after
a couple years).  My cycles since then have been 30 days, until
november when my cycle was 24 days.  My last period ended on
november 27th (6 days).  Anyway, we started trying in December
and I didn't ovulate (according to an ovulation kit) until
December 20th.  We did have sex on the 18th, 20th and 21st.  It
seems like I ovulated pretty late and I am wondering when to
take a pregnancy test, as I would have expected to have my
period around the time I ovulated!  Also, I have read online that
late ovulation could be bad as I am unlikely to get pregant and
the eggs are "old"  is this something I should be concerned
about?  Could I be pregnant?
Thanks very much,
Kirsten

Answer
You can become pregnant whenever you ovulate, even if it is later than expected. If you believe you may have conceived on December 18,20,or 21, wait 14-21 days and take a pregnancy test. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period, or 21 days after the suspected date of conception.
