QuestionHi, i'm 32 yrs. old and I have 3 children. All 3 were term and healthy babies. When my first son was about 9 mnths. old, I developed a blood clot (dvt) in my right arm. I was in the hospital for 1 week on heparin i.v. and coumadin for about 6 mos. after. My next 2 pregnancies were high risk, but no complications. After my 3rd child Dr. recommed I seriously think twice about having anymore. I had a tubaligation done 5 yrs. ago. Everything has gone well. A year ago I have noticed mood changes about a week before my period, (periods are always normal 7 days). It's to where I, myself notice a huge mood swing w/everybody, family, and coworkers, etc., tiredness, crampy legs and all the fun stuff. In August I did not have a period. I have a new M.D., and he told me to take a pregnancy test, it came back negative. Called my Gynocologist and they wanted to order me some medication without seeing me. I told them no, I would wait and see. Due to my blood clot before I was told I had to be careful if I ever needed female medication. I told the nurse at the Gynocologists office and after she dug in my file a little longer she had seen my health history and said good idea to wait it out. September and October were not as long as they normally are, November pretty much just spotted now for December I spotted for 2 days last week and again this week have spotted for 1 day. I was taking a baby aspirin (85) daily and about 2 years ago when I got my new M.D. he put me on 325 mg aspirin daily. I also wonder about the aspirin could it be to strong for me, I really haven't noticed any difference between the 2 aspirins. I myself would like to take the baby aspirin. Isn't the 325 aspirin pretty strong? Anyway about my periods, what could be going on? I called the Gynocologists office again and the nurse ( I haven't yet been able to talk directly to the Gyno) said it was probably just my age. Also, I have had no sexual desire either. Is this all linked together? Can you help? Thank you, Misty
AnswerThe spotting may be due to some hormonal imbalance, but it also may be due to too much aspirin. I would suggest going back to the Baby Aspirin dosage you were taking before and take one every day. Since you have a history of DVTs in your arm, I would be hesitant about starting Estrogen therapy, and would discuss your menstrual irregularity with your gynecologist as well as with your hematologist. It is a bit too early in your life to be approaching menopause, but you may have a deficiency in progesterone or estrogen. I would get a progesterone level and an FSH, Prolactin, and Estradiol level to see the status of your hormones. Then weight the risks with your gyn and decide the correct course of therapy.
