A fishy odor in the vagina indicates a vaginal infection. There should not be any odor in a healthy vagina. The fishy odor is due to the realease of amines.

NEVER,NEVER,NEVER douche. There are good bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that live in the vagina and can "flare up" when you douche. You should only wash the OUTSIDE of the vagina in a bath or shower and allow the water to work its way in on its own.
