Navigating Fertility Challenges: A Woman's Medical History & Concerns
QuestionI am a 25 year old female. I have had one child via c-section. After that, I had my tubes tied. Before all of that, I have had endometriosis, poly cystic ovarian syndrome, and dysplasia (for which I had an in office biopsy and he got it all in the biopsy he took.) I have also had a laproscopy and two DNC's. I have had 3 miscarriages prior to being pregnant with my son. That is my brief history. Now on to my question. A few weeks ago, I went to my gynocologist for my yearly pap smear and because I had been cramping extremely bad and bleeding a lot. I had bled for 4 straight weeks. It was so heavy that I had to wear double protection and change those every 2 hours. Well, my doctor felt that it was most likely endometriosis again, so he put me on birth control. After starting the birth control pills, I stopped bleeding for three days and then I started back up again, dropping large clots and again had major cramps. So I called my doctor and he just said to give the pills a little longer to take effect and he called me in some Darvocet for the pain (which does me no good because I can't take that and work). Well here I am over a week later and I am still pouring blood and having excruciating cramps. I am concerned that he is not taking my complaints seriously and does not want to do what is necessary because I am so young. He has not ran any tests on me at all besides my regular pap smear which came back normal. My mom had a hysterectomy at 26 because she had similar problems and later she had developed cervical cancer. Most all the women in my family have had female troubles and had a hysterectomy at an early age. I am wondering if I need to have a hysterectomy. I am done having children and I am extremely tired of bleeding so much and constantly being in pain. I don't know what is wrong with me, but I do know that I cannot continue to bleed like this because I am already anemic. So my question is, what could be wrong with me since the pap smear came out fine? Do I need to ask my doctor to run some more tests or should I just leave it alone and wait it out? Is a hysterectomy a good option for me? Please advise. Thank you in advance. Have a great day.
AnswerWhat type of birth cohntrol pills did you start? If you are bleeding so much, you probably have to change your birth control pills to a stronger prescription. I doubt that hysterectomy is a consideration at your age, unless you have such intractable bleeding that there is no other choice. You may first consider endometrial ablation, where the inside of your uterus is cauterized. I would first discuss all of this with your gyn. If you believe that this doctor is not taking you seriously, switch doctors.
