Understanding Bio-Physical Ultrasounds During Pregnancy
QuestionHello, LMP sept.20TH/05 37 weeks pregnant. Just have a question about ultra sound. My doctor has booked me and ultra sound next week. Supposedly a bio-physical umm didn't really question much and just took it for what it was. But Im wondering is this just routine. Just because she wants me to go have one done doesn't mean there's anything wrong right? She says everything looks great. By the way due June 28th. And what exactally is a bio-pysical and why is it neccessary? Is it just to check fluids and estimated fetal weight?
AnswerA biophysical preofile is a sonogram that checkes ethe amount of amnii0tic fluid, movement of the baby, tone of the baby, and breathing movements. The BPP also includes a Non Stress test. Each of these paremeters gives a score of 2 giving a toral score of 10 our of 10. If the score is less than 7/10 it is worrisome. Ideally, it is 8/10 The amniotic fluid index shiould be greater than 9. We just do the BPP to assess well being of the baby. If there is oess movememt than usual, or if you reached 40 wees and have not gone into labor, if it is a large baby, if you have gestational diabetes, hypertension, or if t hey just want to assess fetal wellbeing, the test is done. It does not mean anything is wrong. Assessment of fetal weight done. If the weight of the baby is greater than 9.5 lbs, your doctor will off you a cesarean section. If it less than 9.5 lbs, you can try for a vaginal delivery. Don't worry about it.
