Baby Size Discrepancy: Understanding a Larger-Than-Average Measurement

Question
Hi, I just went to the doctor, and he told me after measuring my stomach that I was 36 cm, when I should only be 32 cm.  I asked what does that mean, he says just that the baby is larger than normal, and I said why, he said I'm sure there is nothing to worry about, but an ultrasound needs to be done asap just to make sure.  I would like to know what this really means, is there an abmorality, is the baby ok, or am I due now, I just would like some peace of mind, thanks wendy.

Answer
It may mean nothing at all.  The Dr. can not tell you actually that the baby is larger than normal at this point.
Your stomach is larger than normal, yes, but he can not be sure the baby is at this point.
You may have a large uterus (that was the case with me) you may have extra fluid or yes, the baby may be big which probably would not hurt anything.
Another possibility is you are futher along than you thought or that there is two or more babies if an earlier ultra sound has not been done ruling that out.
Try to relax, good luck and CONGRATS!
