Understanding Bleeding After Ovulation: Causes & When to Worry

Question
Thank you for your quick response. I am concerned as I have been bleeding for 2 days now (yesterday & today). It has become heavier (I've had to wear a tampon) but is not as heavy as my normal period. Is that normal for implantation bleeding? My cycles are usually 28 day cycles, on occassion it has varied to 29 days but never more than that. My family history includes a sister (4 years younger than me, I'm 32) who had endometriosis & cysts and eventually had to have one of her ovaries removed 3 years ago. My grandmother, aunt & great aunt all had uterine &/or cervical cancer. My OB/GYN did the ultrasound because during my cycles in February & April this year, I had some very strong pains near the left ovaries. Since she new we were planning to try to conceive this month, she wanted to make sure I did not have any cysts or worse. She did the internal & external sonogram & everything checked out fine.

Question -
Hi, I've had regular cycles for years. My first day of my last cycle was May 30. This is our first time trying to get pregnant. I should have ovulated on the 13th and yesterday (the 17th)I started bleeding lightly. I woke up this morning and am still bleeding slightly, but this time there are small clots in the blood. The blood is red like a normal period, but lighter. I had an ultrasound 3 weeks ago because I had some light pain and my doctor wanted to rule any issues out due to my family history. Everything was fine. Is this normal? I can't find anything that describes this. I didn't know if I should call my OB/GYN or see what happens? I'm not due to start my next cycle until the 26th.

Answer -
If you  have a normal 28 day cycle (from the firsst day of yuor period untiil t he first day of your next period, ovulation occrs on cycle daty #14. Therefore,  if  your period started on May  30,  you would have ovulated on June 12. You could have become pregnant on June 11,12,13, or 14. If you became pregnant on one of those days, the bleeding  that you had on June 17 couold have been implantation, kalthough impantation bleedin usually occurs 8 days after ovultion.ovulation. Why did you have a sonogram on May 20> What us your family history that caused your doctor to do a sonogram.  You next period is due on June 26. If youo do not get your period by June July 2, take  pregnancy. Get back to me with the reason for the sonoigram and how long your cycles usually are.

Answer
I understand that you are concerned. As I said before, implantation bleeding usually occurs in 8 days from concepteion. That is the time it  takes for the fertilized ovum to pass down the fallopian tube to the uterus and start implanting. If you are concerned about the bleeding, go to your gynecologist to rule out a miscarriage. It is possible that  you did not become pregnant  on  June 11,12,13, or 14. In that scenario, the bleeding on June 17 may merely have been ovulatory bleeding (mittelshmerz). If you are worried about the bleeding, see your doctor.
