QuestionQUESTION: I had my Mirena IUD removed on February 28th, 2 weeks 4 days ago. Since then I have been bleeding on a daily basis. Sometimes light, sometimes heavier. Sometimes brown, sometimes red. Sometimes small blood masses - clots? I had my Mirena removed the day after my 7 day period, so feel like I have been bleeding for 3.5 weeks. My regular OB/GYN was not available. I spoke with someone else who is really new to the field and practice. She offered to put me on the pill to stop the bleeding. I do not really want more hormones in my body.
My questions are:
Is this bleeding common after Mirena removal? If so, how long can it go on for?
How long can I leave the bleeding till I have to take action?
What possible actions could be taken?
Thanks in advance for your help!
ANSWER: I have a question to ask you. Why was the IUD removed. Is it because you are trying for a child or for some other reason.
IUD removal can cause some bleeding and more so in the case of hormonal IUD which release progesterone at a slow pace into the uterus. But this bleeding should not exceed one month. So i think you should stop in the next few days. But in the meantime if the bleeding is distressing then you may try a five day course of progesterone tablets. They should do you no harm and will stop the bleeding. This is particularly useful if you are looking to conceive.
And finally if the IUD was removed for some other reason than a anticipated pregnancy, then simply insert it again and your bleeding will stop immediately.

QUESTION: Thank you for your speedy reply! I had it removed as I had it in for 7 years. I know, it's a 5 year device. I had thought it was 10 years. I am not trying to conceive. I have 2 wonderful boys, 10 and 8:)
The bleeding only concerns me if it is something I should be worried about. It sounds like this is normal? If it goes on much longer, the progesterone sounds like a good idea. My Sister also suggested non-hormonal Lysteda?
AnswerIf you are not trying to conceive then just get a new IUD. It will immediately stop the bleeding, is an excellent contraceptive, prevents excessive menstrual blood loss and also prevents many form of endometrial cancer. So why not get a new minerva inserted. Your uterus has had it for seven years and it should not have any problems now also.
