Provera and Pregnancy: Can Provera Mask Early Pregnancy Symptoms?

Question
My period has been irregular.  I went to my Dr. and he did a urine test..said it was negative.  During my exam he asked if I has tender breasts or morning sickness.  I replied no.  He proscribed provera to enduce a period.
I did get one in may and june.  Just now
I have discoved I am pregnant.  However i have not yet been seem I feel and look much further along than 4-6 weeks.  Is it possible looking back that i was bareoly pregnant when I saw the Dr. and he missed it?  And if so could the provera have enduced a second period during pregnancy?  I have an appointment scheduled for next week , but I am very concerned.

Answer
Hi Michelle,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I doubt the provera caused you to have a period during pregnancy.  Heavy bleeding during a pregnancy is not usual, some spotting perhaps, but regular, heavy bleeding would not normally occur, even with the provera.

An ultrasound will better pinpoint how far along your baby is in its development. I will say that every time I have been pregnant I always looked way farther along than I was.

I would bet that the tests are accurate and you are probably 6 weeks, maybe 7 weeks along. A doctor's office urine test is very sensitive; these tests pick up the same hormone in urine called HcG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) that is only produced in a pregnancy. A home test picks up HcG at about 100. A doctor's office test (urine not blood) picks up HcG at 25 which is VERY low, and they are very sensitive. A blood test, called a Quantitative Beta hcG,  would be even more accurate and can also tell just about how far along a pregnancy is.

They will probably send you for an ultrasound to verify  the pregnancy... and to see if there is only one baby growing or if there are multiples (twins, etc) you wont be able to see much of anything on the ultrasound, the baby will probably look like a little peanut.

You will be just fine! You may never get morning sickness, which is great. I never really did get it.

Good luck! I am sure things will be just fine. Dont worry!
