Depo Provera & Pregnancy Risk: What To Do After Unprotected Sex

Question
I have been on the depo shot for almost six months now. i am always on time for my shot and never miss it. I recently had unprotected sex and my partner ejaculated in me. I have had a light period the whole time I've been on the depo shot and everytime after I have sex I wont bleed for a couple days, but this time I'm a little worried because it's the first time I've let ejaculated in me. Should I be worried about being prergnant? Also since I've still been bleeding on the depo shot does that mean I'm still ovulating?

Answer
Hi Sophia,

the Depo shot is supposed to stop you from ovulating. But since your body still produces other hormones this is why you still can bleed. It also is supposed to thicken and alter the cervical mucus making it harder for an embryo or sperm to survive. It is possible to get a period and bleed without ovulating.

Should you worry about being pregnant? Probably not since you have taken the shot faithfully, and according to the Depo statistics it is 97-99% effective. I dont blame you for being worried, I had my tubes tied years ago and STILL would worry about unwanted pregnancy! I suppose it is just one of those things that women worry about. You sound like you are trying your best to prevent a pregnancy by having the depo shots.

I think you would be fine, but if you are really concerned you should take a home pregnancy test if your period is late. Check with your doctor or a nurse at the office, maybe they might have some more information for you that might relieve your fears a little.

Good luck, I think you will be just fine.
