Pregnancy Risk & Vitamin Needs: Irregular Cycles & Folic Acid
QuestionMy OBGYN told me in the past that I could not get pregnant unless I had a regular cycle for at least 6 months. I have been irregular (few times a year) since I was 12. I am concerned that I have an elevated risk for complications of any kind. Do you think that is true? In addition, I have never been a good eater nor do I take a vitamin and I am enimic. I am pretty sure I am pregnant and want to make sue that I get enough vitamins especially Folic Acid. In the mean time until I can get a OBGYN visit would it be ok to take a regular multi vitamin?
AnswerHi Christina,
A regular multi vitamin should be just fine until your OB can prescribe prenatal vitamins for you.
In the meantime, to help the anemia, you'd want to really eat foods that are higher in iron. Now is the time to start improving your diet.
Cycle irregularity and pregnancy complications are not related, as far as I know. There is no reason why you should have any complications if you are a healthy woman. You do need to get your anemia taken care of though. Pregnancy can cause anemia (happens to me each time) and if you are starting out anemic you need to really get this fixed. The dr will most likely give you iron pills for this.
Congratulations- take good care of yourself! Stay hydrated too; drink your water and like your mom said... eat your veggies! :-)
