LASIK and Pregnancy: Can You Conceive After Eye Surgery?

Question
I recently had Lasik eye surgery done but I am interested in becoming pregnant.  How soon is it alright to start trying to conceive?  My doctor's concern is the stability of my eyesight yet I feel the surgery was a success and am thrilled with the results.  Can I at least start taking prenatal vitamins?  I appreciate any advice you could offer.

Answer
Hello Amy. Pregnancy can sometimes cause changes in the eyesight due to changes in fluid levels in the body. I urge you to follow the advise of the dr. who did the surgery- he/she is the one who knows how long it will be before your corneas can handle the changes of pregnancy. Yes, start with prenatal vitamins AND folic acid supplements of 1-2mg per day. DO NOT take the vitamins you get at the drug store- even those ordered by your dr. Go to the health food store and buy prenatal vitamins that must be taken 3 times a day- they are much better absorbed and of higher quality- be sure to add the folic acid. All the best- Cheri.
