Question -
I currently have an anal fissure and am trying to get pregnant also. I have a constipation problem and have wiened myself off of stimulant laxitives and green teas and stool softeners. I now take metamusil and Milk of Magnesia(MOM). I was told this is safe during pregnancy by a pharmacist and was told otherwise by people on my anal fissure self help page. They told me that it may absord too many vitamins like iron and folic acid and thats not good for the baby. If I take my vitamins in the morning and Milk of magnesia before bed would that be OK and still let the vitamins get to the baby? If I take it at 11pm at night thats 12 hours away from vitamin supplements and away from any meals. Thank you for your time and please respond quickly.

Sincerely Kelly

Hello Kelly- STOP - you MUST alter your food intake NOW. If you require these constant bowel preparations, your diet is NOT good enough to have a healthy pregnancy OR baby. Before you try to conceive, you must take a serious look at your food and make changes. Do you drink 8 cups of plain water every day?, do you eat raw vegetables every day? do you eat fresh fruit 3 times a day? do you eat cooked whole grain cereal every day? do you eat BROWN rice( NOT white)? etc- if you would like more nutrition info- get back to me. Cheri.

If someone has IBS and chronic constipation diet modification may not help alone. I eat many fruits and veggies. Dont eat breads or pastas unless whole grained. Drink TONS of water ever since I got my fissure. When all of that fails, I have to take a Tablespoon of Milk of Magnesia around 10 pm and make sure its far away from vitamins and meals so all the nutrients from from vitamins and meals are absorbed. If Im eating healthy and take MOM away from all vitamins and meals , will that be OK? I cannot possibly have a healthy pregnancy if Im under stress from tearing my anus everytime I have a BM. Please help!

Answer
Kelly- it would have helped to know about the IBS in the first place! Yes, your routine with the MOM in the late evening is fine. I know how painful a fissure can be- have you used Annusol plus supps? They help a great deal. All the best- Cheri.

Bye the way- you MAY find that your bowel problem almost disappears during pregnancy- bowels have a wonderful way of normalizing with the hormones of pregnancy- best of luck- Cheri.
