Understanding Quant Tests & Early Pregnancy Risks: A Support Discussion

Question
I just recentlly found out taht i was pregnant. dr said that i was about 5 wks, and sent me for an ultrasound. i was then sent for a quant. my first level was 4000 and second was 6000. the dr said i was not a tubal pregnancy but i was at high risk for a misscarrage. have you even heard one something like this? and what will they do next? i'm really scared this is my first pregnancy. could my levels not be doubling due to stress or a very early pregnancy? i go to the drs on monday and they have already talked about doing a D & C what advice can you give?

Answer
Hi Tiffany,

I am sorry you are going through such a stressful first pregnancy.

it sounds like your HcG levels are not rising like they should. I need some more info:

How far apart were the two blood tests? (the quantitatives)

Did the doctor do an ultrasound? If so what did it show? how do they know it is not a tubal pregnancy?

With HcG levels there IS a bit of flexibility as to how they should double... but if the blood tests were several days apart and it has only gone up half way (50% like yours did) it is  a sign that something is not right. This is why I am asking how far apart these tests were done.

Stress and early pregnancy wont affect the rising of Hcg though.

Please let me know if they did the ultrasound and what did it show, and how far apart the blood tests were.

if they are already talking D+C... is there any way to let nature to its thing and see how the pregnancy does on its own? If they did not do an ultrasound I would at least try to have them do one to see what they can see.
