Understanding HSG: Pain, Procedure, and What to Expect

Question
I have been asking you questions for sometime now and you have been extremely helpful each time.  I have a question about (HSG)hysterosalpingogram.  I had one yesterday and it was the most painful thing I have ever had!  I begged the dr.s to stop because I could not take it.  After about 20 min. they stopped because they could not get a clear picture, so they told me to come back in 2 hours and do it again.  I did and that time it took only 5 min.  I have been researching this subject on the internet and everyone is saying its "slight discomfort" not usually more that a period. The dr. said everything was nomal inside of me and there was no blockage.  Why was this such an awful, extremely painful experience for me when everyone else is saying its nothing more than a regular pelvic exam?  Thank you for your time.

Answer
HSGs do cause severe discomfort. The pain is the end-point for which the techs are waiting you to reach so they know that there is or is not a blockage of the tube. Sometimes there is a kink in the tube that can cause more pain or cause an unclear picture to be seen. If they eventually see "fill and spill" from the fallopian tubes, it is considered a normal HSG and you probably have patent tubes. I'm sorry that nobody informed you of the pain you were going to experience.
