Understanding HCG Levels and Early Pregnancy Concerns

Question
Hi I am currently about 7 weeks pregnant.  I have had no spotting.  The other day my doctor took my  HCG levels because we were unable to find the heart beat.  I wasn't too concerned because the baby is so small it would be hard to hear the heart beat.  Although when we got my second blood work back my levels had dropped in two days from 30,000 to 25,000.  My doctor said no doubt this is a miscarriage.  I am just wondering is there any chance that he could be wrong maybe since it hadn't dropped that much it was just faulty test?  Everything I have read says it could be a sign of a miscarriage.

What do you think?
And when will I start bleeding or cramping?
How long does this take?

Answer
Hi Stacy,

I am so sorry for your news.  Unfortunately unless there was a lab error, falling HcG level is a sign of a miscarriage.

Your HcG should have been around 60,000 if it was 30,000 the previous 2 days. So a drop to 25,000 is pretty significant and is not a good sign.

Bleeding/cramping may start any time... sometimes the doctors may have to help things along, there are meds you can take (not sure of the names though) or you may wind up having a D+C if necessary.   It can take various amount of time- I have heard days, or a week even... maybe more.

I'm sorry I didnt have good news for you.
(hugs)
