Irregular Periods: Causes, Implantation Bleeding & What to Do

Question
Usually I am very regular, have 28 day cycles. The last 2 periods were different. The first was 5 days late, short and light. 2nd was 6 days late, short and light. Im 31, not under stress. What could cause that? Im sexually active and not using birth control.

Answer
Hi Joanne :)

Well, pregnancy is always viable possibility in a situation like yours. However in most cases, if pregnant women do bleed during pregnancy, its usually implantation bleeding. Implantation bleeding is associated with mild cramping, and spotty bleeding. Often, its dark in colour. Usually, it happens around the time that women are due their period, thus its often assumed to be a period. It usually happens when their first period is due, after they have concieved. Usually about 2 weeks after conception. It's not usual, for this process to show itself 2 months in a row however.

Second scenario, is that you are just having a couple of abnormal periods. It DOES happen time to time, but can be alarming, when you are to cycles that appear simular month to month. Usually, things do go back to normal. This can be caused by several things, such as worry, stress, and physical illness such as flu and cold.

Thirdly, you could be suffering a slight hormonal imbalance. Again, it does happen time to time. And its common for women to occasionally experience abnormal bleeding, and late periods due to a hormonal imbalance. Again, its nothing to worry about, and it often corrects itself.

If I were you, I would do a home pregnancy test, and rule out pregnancy. You could also see your doctor, and ask for a BETA HCG blood test, that conclusively diagnoses pregnancy.

If the test comes back negative, its probably just hormonal, or just abnormal period brought on by fluke.

Regardless, I dont think its anything serious at all, and if you are not pregnant, then most likely, your cycles will return to normal, in time.

Hope this answers your question, and thanks for writing!
