Irregular Periods & Fertility: What You Need to Know

Question
Hi Brenda, My husband and i are trying to get pregnant. I have never tracked my period before until these last few months. Every month the length of my cycle is different. Started with 28 days, then 27, and this month 26. Also my period sometimes only lasts 3 days, is this normal? Will any of this affect me trying to get pregnant, or do all women fluctuate monthly like this? Also how do i figure out when i am ovulating if i am not on a 28 day cycle/day 14? Thank you so much.  Alison

Answer
Dear Alison,

Many women vary by a few days from cycle to cycle - this is not abnormal. A three day period is fine too. The duration of women's periods often vary from 3-6, even 7, days. The average length is five days.

Women typically ovulate 14 days prior to the beginning of the next period. For you, this may vary by a few days. So, you will have to cover the fertile window to be sure you are hitting the correct time frame if you want to be sure.

My suggestion would be to start by having sex every other day from CD9 (cycle day) through CD17 (CD1 being the 1st day of your period). This should be a broad enough amount of time that it should cover any variance in your ovulation day.

If you are unable to do that, pay attention to your cervical mucus. In the days leading up to ovulation your CM will become more abundant, wetter, and stringy like a raw egg whites consistency. This is a signal that your body is fertile.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and fantastic results!
