Brown Spotting After Ovulation: What Does It Mean?

Question
I stopped taking the pill September of 2006 and have been trying to get pregnant ever since. I have taken ovulation tests since October 2006 and got positive ovulation tests the last three months in a row so I think I am ovulating. The issue is I start dark brown spotting about five to eight days after my positive ovulation test and it never turns red. It lasts from about to five days but never turns red. What may be the issue?

Answer
Dear Kristy,

Brown blood usually simply indicates blood that has been sitting in the uterus - not fresh blood. This isn't necessarily a symptom that you are not ovulating, but may just be a bit of a hormonal issue.

Don't get discouraged. It takes the average couple an average of six months to conceive. And some often try for up to 12 months. This is not unusual. It's frustrating, I know, but not unusual.

Keep an eye on your cervical mucus too. Watch for the time it becomes abundant and more wet and stringy like an "egg whites" consistency. This also indicates ovulation.

Try having sex every other day from Day 11 through Day 20 of your cycle. This will allow for any variation in your ovulation day.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and fantastic luck!
