Ovulation Problems: Understanding Questionable Progesterone & Fertility
QuestionHello! My name is Kari and I'm 29 yrs old. I have one son (3 1/2) who was conceived on the first try. My last menstrual period began on 9/17 and my cycles are pretty regular, averaging 28-29 days. I've been trying for baby #2 for 14 months now with no luck. My doc recently ordered a sperm analysis that came back normal and a progesterone test which came back "questionable" (what does that mean?) and he thinks I'm not ovulating. He now wants to do an HSG and then possibly start me on Clomid. My question is: Is it possible to not ovulate even though I have regular periods, egg-white CM one day, and + OPK's? I've been charting temps too, and there is a very slight shift around the time I believe I should've O'd. It's not a huge temp rise, but it stays higher until my next period comes. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thank you!
AnswerIf you have a normal 28 day period (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation probably occurs on cycle day #14. You can only become pregnant if you have sex on cycle day
#13, 14, 15, or 16 (which I'm sure you know). It may be easier for you to purchase an ovulation predictor kit to pinpoint the exact day of ovulation. If your progesterone test was "questionable" it may have been too low. You may benefit from progesterone supplementation until you conceive and then daily until you are 11 weeks gestational age. When charting your BBT, there is usually a slight dip in the temperature just before the day of ovulation, and then you should notice a "biphasic" curve to the chart, with all temperatures slightly higher after ovulation, and all temperatures slightly lower prior to ovulation. If you notice that type of chart and you get your period regularly, you most likely are ovulating. An HSG will show if any of your tubes are blocked. Clomid may help increase the probability of ovulation by increasing the number of graafian follicles that mature in your ovaries. I would follow all of your doctor's instructions and try the Clomid. Good Luck.
