Understanding Cervical Dilation: What Does 1+ Mean?

Question
i went to the doctor today and she had told me that my cervix was dilated to a 1 plus i was wondering what that was is that like almost a 2 or just barely a one and how long does it usually take after you start to dilate to lose your mucus plug. cant wait to hear back thank you

Answer
Dear Lissette,

A "1+" would be between a 1 and 2cm - a bit more than 1cm. So...it is starting for you!  :-)  Please remember that the effacement, or thinning out, of the cervix is just as important as dilation. Don't get discouraged about dilation not happening as fast as you wish it to as long as you are seeing progress in effacement too.

There is no firm time as to when you will lose your mucus plug. Some women lose their mucus plug as early as 36 weeks' gestation, while many others may not lose it until labor has begun. Sometimes women may not even notice that they are losing their mucus plug because it happens gradually, over several weeks, and they've already gotten used to the increased amount of the vaginal discharge that most have with pregnancy. Typically though, as that cervix starts to dilate and thin out, the plug will be lost.

If you do notice the loss of your mucus plug, don't panic if it is mixed with brown, pink, or red streaks of blood. This is just due to the changes occurring with the cervix.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well!
