38 Weeks Pregnant & Not Dilated? What to Expect

Question
I am almost 38 week pregnant and I haven't dilated yet.  Should I be worried?  This is my first pregnancy and I am due on 9/11/07.

Answer
Dear "jackydm13",

No worries - the timing of dilation (opening of the cervix) and effacement (thinning of the cervix) is different for every woman and for every pregnancy. For first time moms, effacement usually begins before any dilation starts.

Effacement is measured in percentages. Your cervix is like a tube about 3-4 cm long and it has to shorten up (or thin out) prior to delivery. After the baby has engaged in the pelvis, it gradually drops closer to the cervix. Whens this happens the cervix gradually softens, shortens and becomes thinner. When you are 100% effaced or completely effaced, your cervix is paper-thin and labor is right around the corner. Many times this process of effacement is necessary before dilation really gets going with an "untested" cervix.

You still have a ways to go. Do not be surprised if you go right up to your due date with this first pregnancy. I know you're getting anxious and impatient in these last few weeks, but unfortunately there's nothing you can do to speed things up. Your body and your baby are in complete charge right now. (He/she is just getting you ready for many days -and nights- to come!)  :-)

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
