QuestionQUESTION: What are the risks/side effects associated with a woman having her cervix removed? Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Savannah,
Risks are infection and bleeding. Side effects are none. I assume that you are talking about a person who had a hysterectomy many years ago whose cervix was left in (that's the way they used to do it). If you are talking about a healthy young woman who is entertaining having her cervix removed, don't worry. NO surgeon will do that.

QUESTION: I'm referring to the former. What about vaginal prolapse, urine problems, or bowel? I thought I read something about the cervix helps give support after the uterus has been removed?
AnswerHi Savannah,
The cervix offers no support to the vaginal cuff. Vaginal prolapse is not a common occurrence and is not related to cervix removal. No urinary problem comes from a cervix removal in its own right. Urinary problems come from bladder dysfunction or position change due to poor muscle tone. No bowel issues either.
