Group B Strep (GBS) at 36 Weeks: What to Expect

Question
I am 36 weeks and have tested positive for GBS. I am about 4 cm dilated 50% efaced and am having irregular contractions. Went to the doctor Wednesday and was only 1 cm then went to the hospital that night, thought my water broke, and was already 4 cm. If I am dilating that quickly without any pain will I get to the hospital in time to be treated to the antibiotics before the baby is delivered?

Answer
Dear Ryan,

WOW - if you are dilating that quickly without any discomfort at 36 weeks, I'm slightly surprised they did not keep you and attempt to at least slow your labor down. Are you on bedrest?

With being positive for GBS, ideally you'll want to get started on the IV antibiotics at least four hours before you give birth, however if your labor is very rapid you may not have that much time. But don't worry - getting started even a couple of hours before delivery significantly lowers the risk to your baby. If you don't get your first dose four hours before the birth, you'll probably need to stay in the hospital for at least 48 hours after delivery so your baby can be observed for any signs of a problem.

Make sure if your contractions become regular AT ALL, that you do not waste any time in getting to the hospital. It sounds like your baby won't waste any time in arriving!  :-)

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
