What a Mucus Plug Means for Your Labor: Signs, Timing, and What to Expect

Question
I am 39 weeks and 3 days along with twins...I had a visit with my dr this morning.  She did a vaginal check, and I am 3 cm dialated and 50% efaced.  After the visit, I went home and not an hour later I was having loose stools and noticed a large amount of gel like substance.  Yesterday morning I woke to a half dollar size blood spot on my liner.  I assume this was the mucus plug.  What do you think about labor possibly following this?

Answer
Hi Melissa,

well I would say what your doctor probably said: it could be any time now, or it could be a few days from now. No one can tell 100%. I wish I could say it should be tonight, based on your symptoms, but only the baby knows when he/she will come on out.

The good news is that being 3 cm dilated that means you are a third of the way DONE already! That is 3 cm you do not have to do in labor. Sometimes when the doctors do the internal exams this loosens things up and you can start the bleeding, etc. All you have to do is get to 4 cm and if you go to the hospital they will keep you and get your labor started... that';s only ONE cm more! WAY better than starting labor from ZERO.

it wont be long now; your body is getting ready! The baby will be here before you know it. Drink lots of water, stay hydrated, walk if you are able, keep your body moving and ready.

good luck and congratulations. hang in there, you are almost done.
