Answer
Dear Syd,

Male condoms, when used as directed from beginning of sexual activity to the end, are 85-98% effective. Male condoms are only effective when placed before any intercourse. An erect penis can seep out pre-ejaculate which can contain sperm cells. So, placing the condom only before actual ejaculation is not fully protecting yourself from pregnancy. Also, the most common causes of condom failure are breakage and slipping. To prevent a condom from breaking, make sure there is enough lubrication from natural secretions or a water-based lubricant (an oil-based lubricant like Vaseline will breakdown the condom and weaken it). Dryness creates more friction and can tear a condom. To keep a condom from slipping off, make sure the rim stays near the base of the penis during intercourse. This is especially important at the end of intercourse as the penis has lost full firmness and is withdrawn. Either person can hold onto the rim.

Because your bleeding is so much lighter than normal for you this cycle, I would suggest that you wait until the week after the bleeding ends and test for pregnancy. When you test make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results. If that test is negative, you can simply wait until the next period to see if it returns to a normal flow (since you know that you did use a condom for protection) or, if you continue to worry about this or begin to experience symptoms of early pregnancy, you can re-test after another week.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
