Progesterone and Period Delay: Understanding Prometrium's Effects

Question
i have had 3 mis/c in 2 years and my dr. now has given me prometrium to take vaginally which i am only supposed to start taking 5-7 days after ovulating and stay on only if i am pregnant.  i stopped taking it after getting a negative pregnancy test, but still have not gotten my period.  can progesterone suppliments delay a period, which will in turn recalculate the ovulation cycle?  thanks.

Answer
Dear C,

Progesterone should not delay your period. In fact it can be used, under the right circumstances, to start a period.

I would suggest that you might want to re-test for pregnancy. You may have tested a bit too early the 1st time around. Make sure you are using 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results. If negative, you can verify that the progesterone would not be affecting your menstrual cycles with your doctor, but that would be surprising to me.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
