Provera and Miscarriage: Exploring the Potential Link

Question
Hello, I went to the dr I was 2 days late. The dr gave me a urine preg test it was neg. And prescribed me provera 10mg. He did not do blood work. After a couple of days of taking this, i took a urine test myself and it was positive. I then got my primary doctor to order a blood test and it was pos. A couple of days after taking the provera I started bleeding and my hcg levels started dropping and I miscarried within a week. My doctor says that this wouldnt have caused me to have problems but everyone else says that it would cause a miscarraige. I feel like he told me this to cover his own butt! It was provera 10 mg. I feel that he was neglectful not to do his own bloodwork before putting me on this medicine. I pray that no one else has to suffer what I am going through. Just wondering what I should do and how I should handle this? Please help and give me some advice.

Answer
Provera is perfectly safe for use during pregnancy. Doctors use Provera to help prevent miscarriage in early pregnancy and it is usually taken until 12 weeks gestation, when it is stopped because the placenta has formed and the placenta produces enough progesterone to maintain the pregnancy. Years ago, before they had the modern monoclonic pregnancy tests, they used Provera as a pregnancy test. If you did not bleed, you were pregnant. If you bled, you were not pregnant. Provera will cause you to get your period if you have missed your period due to hormonal imbalance. Provera will also stop your bleeding if you have some dysfunctional uterine bleeding (twice a day for five days). During pregnancy, Provera does not cause bleeding. Provera definitely does NOT cause a miscarriage and is definitely used during pregnancy, expecially if you have a low progesterone level.
