Abdominal Pain After C-Section: Understanding Scar Tissue & Adhesions

Question
I had a c section almost 2 years ago. Recently I started ab exercises; the area near my incision feels like it ripping apart... is that possible?

Answer
Scar tissue is very strong, so there is no chance that after 2 years that you will injure the area.

But you might have adhesions, which form as part of the healing process. Adhesions connect your scar to underlying tissue. Any tugging or pulling on these can cause discomfort. Some bodies tend to form adhesions, while others do not.

You can try some scar mobilization techniques to gently stretch your scar and release underlying tissue.

With your fingertips oiled, hold down one end of your scar and gently stroke down the length of your scar. You want to feel a slight stretching of your scar. Repeat this massage stroke 10 times, then reverse sides.

Your can also gently roll your fingertips across the scar. If you find an area that's tighter, gently massage more into it, slowly building up elasticity.

Make sure that you are doing lots and lots of Transverse Abdominis strengtheners. No matter how far your are from childbirth, you do not want to start with exercises like crunches.
