QuestionDr. Johnson,
My name is Michelle and yesterday, Sept 12,2009, my husband had to take me to the emergency room because I was vomiting, and had a serious case of diahrrea, then I noticed a bright bloody discharge, with no clots, When the ultrasound was in process, I was still bleeding, but not to much. My question is after blood work and ultrasounding tests, the baby is about 6wks, which now it has a heartbeat that the ultrasound tech saw. As excited as I am, the er doctor said that I had a slight tear of my cervix, by the uterus. She told us that it wasn't a big deal, and the bleeding should stop. But it was also discovered that I have a UTI which the er doctor says is or could be the cause to the tear. Do I have to be concerned about a miscarriage during the next 6 weeks if there is no bleeding or cramping? Also, when the UTI goes away, will I be out of danger, or is this cervical tear something a bit more serious that I should have my ob/gyn check. This is my third pregnancy, and both others this never happened! What do you think is the cause, and in your opinion, am I labled or will I be a high risk pregnancy? Finally, when and if this pregnancy goes to term, can I ask my Dr. to tie my tubes? Im 36 and this pregnancy was NOT PLANNED! and, I cannot take the pill due to my hypoclycimia. Look foward to your response if you have the time, It will ease my and my husband's mind, this is our one and ONLY together, and I want this!!
AnswerHi Michelle,
The UTI and the tear will not cause any harm to your baby. You are not considered high risk. During pregnancy more blood flows to your cervix so the area is sensitive and sometimes sex can cause tears, which can cause UTI due to bacteria entering the tear. I do believe this is what happened to you, so you do not need to visit your OB/GYN unless you feel the need to do so. If you have thought long and hard about sterilization then I don't see any reason why you cannot have this done. Good luck!
