Groin Pain During Pregnancy: Causes & When to Worry

Question
Hi!  I am 37 weeks and I work on my feet as a Registered Veterinary Nurse.  After a too long shift I started getting a pain going down my groin (starting a little higher than the crease of my thigh and going down).  The pain feels like I put my finger in an electrical socket, it is quick, fast, and almost debilitating.  The pain has continued and will just come and go after standing or walking.  Is this just my nerves being pressed on or should I be more concerned.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Dana,

It could either be your nerves being pressed on or your body preparing for birth. Your body is running high with hormones such as progesterone and relaxin which have a loosening effect on your muscles, joints, and ligaments.  This process helps prepare your body for childbirth, but also causes relaxation of tissues and joints that normally support your body. Bending and sitting improperly can put extra pressure and tension on your hips and groin as can standing for extended periods of time. Wear good shoes, high heeled shoes and shoes without support can contribute to groin pain. When sleeping, lie on your side with your knees and hips bent.  Try placing a pillow between your knees and one under your belly.  This can take pressure off your groin. If you will be standing for extended periods of time, try to keep one of your feet elevated on a low stool.
