Cervical Tear in Early Pregnancy: Causes, Risks & What to Expect

Question
I am nine weeks pregnant and have been bleeding off and on for 3 weeks.  I had an ultrasound done on Monday that apparently showed a tear in the cervix.  My doctor called and said that right now we have only a 50/50 chance of carrying the baby.  And that I should limit my activities.  My question is:  How is a tear like this caused?  I can only find info on this during the last trimester and during labor.  Also why only a 50/50 chance.  I dont understand.  In the ultrasound the baby seems to be developing normally and has a good strong heartbeat.

Any information you can provide would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

Rose

Answer
HI Rose,
I would do complete bedrest even if you had to til the end of pregnancy. When there is a tear the fear of losing the baby is greater because the placenta could separate from the wall of the uterus. Thus causing miscarraige. Hopefully,
the bedrest and keeping your appts will keep this from happening. Please let me know what happens.
